What is a REMC?
REMC stands for Regional Educational Media Center.
REMCs were created by the Michigan State Legislature in 1970 to serve the elementary and secondary schools in Michigan and enhance educational opportunities for Michigan's children. There are twenty-two REMCs in Michigan. REMC #1, #21 and #22 are located in the Upper Peninsula. REMC #1 serves the Copper Country Intermediate School District and the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District and is located in the Copper Country Intermediate School District building at 809 Hecla Street in Hancock. Within the five counties, Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon, REMC #1 serves approximately 10,000 students and 700 educators in public and private schools.
The role of REMC #1 is to provide technology and instructional materials support to local school districts. REMC #1 maintains a media collection of over 4,000 items, coordinates Distance Learning Education across the five county region, and provides Internet access to students and staff.
Each REMC has a Board which sets policy, and an Advisory Council which advises the REMC Board and the REMC Director. The Advisory Council is composed of representatives from each school district belonging to the REMC.
